See on Scoop.it – THE ONE DROP RULE – LA REGOLA DELLA GOCCIA UNICA
I am not your tragic mulatto
I am not lost or confused
Being “mixed” don’t mean I’m “all mixed up”
It simply gives me different views
I am not an oddity or a sideshow attraction
only here to satisfy your curious reaction
I am not your tragic mulatto
I will not be pigeonholed
I will dare to claim my place in this world
Free, confident, and bold
I am not your tragic mulatto
I am not a sad clown
I have the strength to keep on living
though life often brings me down
I am a black white girl and a white black girl
I am classical, rock, and opera
I am jazz, blues, ska, hip-hop, and rocksteady
I am double Dutch and nappy kitchens
I am jambalaya and brownstew chicken
I am what America will look like in a few years
although we mulattoes are nothing new
We’ve been around for centuries!
But our histories and her-stories have been denied
confined to little boxes
I am not your tragic mulatto, dammit!
I am not an exotic pet
My blood is a virtual rainbow
How lucky can one person get?
